In the house
Explain everything you do. As baby loves to hear your voice and wants to learn about the world.
For example: “Mama is making her breakfast. She makes oats which are providing lots of energy. We are also adding flax seeds, as these are good for your gut. Etc. Etc..”
This is also a perfect way to combine house tasks with baby playing time. However, it doesn’t sound super exciting. While being a mum: combining house choirs and baby playing time is your new way to multitask.
Outdoors in nature
While babies love to hear everything you do in the house. Taking your baby on an outdoor trip is even better. It can be as easy as taking baby around the garden or on the balcony. Explain all the elements of nature you see. The touch of the wind on the skin. Sunlight. The different plants around you.
You be amazed at how much beauty there is around you.
If you have the sea near, a forest or a park. Go there. Show all the beauty nature has to offer to your little one.
Shopping and being in the city
There is a difference between outdoors in nature and outdoors in the city. As the patterns and sounds of nature help you – and baby – to relax.
Being in a busy place, with lots of people, unnatural sounds and intense colours could get overstimulating. So keep a close eye on your baby. If she gets a bit fussy better go home. You never want to overstimulate your baby.
Our first trip out was from our mountain to the village. I’d preferred to take Saoirse to the sea or river but we needed to register her. As I felt a bit anxious about exposing her to the “busy” village. It all went super smoothly. We feel that baby Saoirse was so relaxed because I was wearing her close. She was facing me, sleeping, not all exposed to all what around. Because, honestly there are way more relaxed and nicer places than a Spanish town hall and supermarket.
Being close to your body helps baby to feel save. No matter where you are.
Mama and baby yoga
What is mama and baby yoga?
Mama and baby yoga is a lovely way to (re)start your yoga practise. While you connect and play with your baby.
There are lots of different styles of mama and baby yoga classes. Some more chilled where you massage and connect with baby. Other classes might include some songs to sing and more active movements for your baby.
You can find classes near you to connect with other mamas and babies.
If you – like me – live on a mountain without any classes around. There is no need to miss out. You can find lots of mama and baby classes online.
When to start?
It all depends on how you feel after giving birth. And what your baby likes.
You can start from around four to six weeks. That is why we include baby yoga in the activities with 1 month old. However, don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work (yet).
Baby Saoirse just started to enjoy mama and baby yoga from about 3 months old. As now she can really see mama. Before she didn’t like to lay on the mat (too long) with mama close. So she would get fussy after 8 minutes or so.
Bottom line: when to start depends on both mama and baby. Start when you feel like doing some yoga again. When your baby doesn’t feel happy yet, wait a bit longer and try again.
Dancing with your baby
Do you feel ready to get up and move a bit? Then this is a great moment to start dancing with your baby! Babies love the combination of movements and music.
Depending on the choice of music it can either be a fun activity or a way to settle baby into sleep. The easiest way to dance is by having baby in the carrier.
Saoirse loves dancing to all sorts of music. As this is what we’ve been doing during pregnancy as well. Dancing is, besides walking outdoor, our favourite way to settle into a relaxing sleep.
