Coffee

Yes, you can definitely take your cup of coffee in the morning. However, be sure not to limit your coffee intake to 2 cups a day. As the caffeine in your coffee goes through the breastmilk. It might cause sleeplessness and fussiness. So try a day without. Or limiting your caffeine intake. When your little one is fussy or has difficulties sleeping.

Black and green tea

Also, black tea and green tea contain caffeine. Be careful with the amount. The best way is to check in with your baby. See what effects your tea has on them.

Chocolate

Chocolate also contains caffeine. So, like with coffee and tea. Try to limit your intake and see the effects on your baby. When your baby sleeps, is happy and calm keep on doing. If baby is fussy or can’t sleep it might be due to the chocolate.

Alcohol

Ideally, you don’t drink any alcohol while nursing. As it affects the sleep pattern of your baby. And reduces your milk supply.

Gassy babies: foods to avoid while breastfeeding

Gluten

Together with dairy, gluten is the main concern for gassy babies. As baby stomach could get up-set due to gluten. Some babies are intolerant but not all. Therefore, gluten is a good one to eliminate out of your breastfeeding diet. Best is to try it for a few days and see what the effects are on your baby.

Personally, I really notice when I eat white gluten. Like white naan bread in this case. My baby’s stomach is super upset at night. A lot of gas and fussiness. So for us, gluten is the number one problem.

However, all babies are different. So try out to eliminate foods one by one. To see how your baby responds.

Breastfeeding foods to avoid for reflux

Spices

Spices, especially too hot. Can have a negative effect on your breastfeeding. As it triggers reflux. Peppermint, sage and parsley is said to decrease your milk supply. So don’t overuse these. Especially not in the cluster feeding times. When your baby needs more milk.

On the other side, there are also spices that improve your milk supply. Like Fenugreek, cumin and cinnamon.

Citrus fruits

Sadly, citrus fruits are sometimes too intense for your baby’ belly. So better to avoid citrus fruits to prevent reflux.

Another way to get your vitamin C is by pineapples and mangoes. Which are tasty alternatives. Which aren’t costing any reflux.

Garlic?

Garlic has a question-mark because there are different ways to view the effects of garlic. One of them is that garlic is super healthy. And even increases your breastmilk flow.

However, some baby’s dislike the taste of garlic. And will refuse to nurse after you’ve eaten garlic. Like all us humans, baby’s taste differs. So check-in and see if garlic effects nursing. As it can also affect colic.
