3 Month Elimination Communication update
Saoirse is officially no newborn anymore. Time went super fast! The first 3 months were an amazing journey. Where we made big steps on our Elimination Communication (EC) journey. Now we are getting a hang of life with our baby. We are also more chilled and relax with EC.
The first 4 weeks
In the first 4 weeks, Elimination Communication went great. No poop diapers. Only a limited misses on wee. However, it was super exhausting.
Now, 3 months further we are more relaxed. As it was all taking too much energy.
Number of dirty (poo) diapers
Now we have 1 poo diaper in the week. Maximum. In the 3 months, we had about 10 to 15 dirty diapers in total. Which we see as a success. It would have been multiple dirty diapers a day. If we didn’t practice EC. As our daughter sure loves to poo! At least one time a day.
In the beginning weeks and during cluster-feeding much more.
When do we miss? Elimination Communication tips!
Poop diapers usually happen because of 3 reasons:
1) In the morning, not waking up fast enough
Saoirse is making soft “A-a-a” noises and wiggling her legs. I think she needs to go. My intuition is right. But I’m waking up and don’t feel like rushing to the bathroom. So, I’m too late.
2) Mama is distracted, chatting
When mama is chatting with other people she gets distracted. Therefore, I missed Saoirse’s signals twice.
The funny thing is that both times I told my friend that EC was such a success. And we rarely missed any poos. Message from the universe to stay humble. 😉
3) While shopping
One time we were in a very big supermarket. Again I could feel she needed to go. But the baby changing room/toilet was too far. We missed.
Like said before.
We missed maximum of 10 to 15 poos in the first 3 months.
7 Elimination Communication tips
1. Get a special EC potty
A special EC potty really makes life easier. You can just place the potty in between your legs. Whilst having your baby on your lap. Very easy, very comfortable. The EC potty has soft edges. So you can please baby on it. While holding her of course. Hence, it really saves your back!
We were a bit late with ordering our EC potty. So in the beginning we were using a dishwasher bowl. Which was a bit difficult. As you needed to hold baby above the bowl.
2. Dress in easy clothes
The thing with EC is that you need to be quick. Because when baby signals she needs to go fast! Clothes that are easy to take off are a lifesaver!
In the beginning, Saoirse was still wearing pyjamas with buttons. This was giving so much chaos at night. Way too difficult when you are half awake. So, now she is wearing an easy body with 3 buttons. A trouser which you can easily take on and off. And a sweater when it is cold.
No buttons pyjama makes the nights so much relaxed! Same counts for her daily outfit. Choose things that are easy to take on and off. Dresses are ideal! Or just naked if the weather allows.
3. Baby always poops more than once (at one time)
Really give enough time for everything to release. As babies have multiple poos in one go. So, be patience mama. You can notice when they are done in different ways. They could start stretching their legs. Get a bit fussy or start making noises.
Key here is to get to know your baby. A way to help in early communication is to introduce sign language.
4. It takes a while for baby to wake up
When our baby wakes up I put her ASAP on the potty. Although sometimes I’m too fast and she is still sleepy. Read: not wee-ing. So, again, be patient. Just wait a while as they do need to go 99,99% sure. Give baby time to wake up and go.
5. Yes she needs to go!
Often baby just did a wee or poo. And she is signing again. So you think what’s up? Trying to make her happy. Although deep down you know: She needs to go again.
Trust your intuition mama! If you feel she needs to go. She does. Also if they just went. Babies go to the potty a lot!
6. Bring a potty in the car
When baby signals in the car it is super difficult to find a place soon. Having a potty in the car makes life easier. Be sure to also have fresh cloth diapers, changing pads and your wipes near.
7. Don’t be to hard on yourself
Last, but certainly not least. Be sweet to yourself mama! You don’t need to catch every wee (or poo) to do EC. It is no problem for your Elimination Communication journey to miss.
Catching every pee. Especially with a newborn. Is almost impossible. As they go so often. Your whole day will just be about catching wee.
Baby will still prefer to go when you give a pottytunity. Even when she had a wet diaper a few times. Or you lost EC for a few days.
So, celebrate every catch! Don’t feel sad or upset if you miss. You are doing great mama!
Summary
Our first 3 months of Elimination Communication was a success. With only 10 to 15 poop diapers in total.
EC went much better than expected. However, we did have misses. But, that is part of life! We learned a lot on the way. And love to share our lessons learned.
Especially ways to make EC easier. Like with clothes that are easy to take off. And a potty nearby.
And to celebrate every catch! Instead of being sad about the misses.
