8 Holistic baby activities:

Skin to Skin time

With Skin to Skin Time. When your baby’s skin is touching yours. She feels save and loved. Skin to skin time gets those oxytocin’s flowing: the love hormone. Oxytocin reduces stress and makes both you and the baby feel good. Full of love for each other.

Breastfeeding meditation

Breastfeeding is magical. While nursing might seem difficult before the start. Your body (and baby) know how to do it. Because it is deeply rooted in your instincts. Did you know that while breastfeeding your body communicates with your baby? And that your breastmilk contains anti-bodies and brain stamp cells? Pure magic, right!?

Cluster-feeding

Breastfeeding requires a lot of time and energy. Especially during cluster-feeding moments. Therefore, you feel hungry and thirsty all the time.

Cluster feedings can make you feel super drained. That’s when I started to make a change in my breastfeeding. As I started to meditate while breastfeeding. And I wished I did that from day one. This is magic!

While focussing on my breath and my heart, I felt such huge energy and love coming from Saoirse. It was recharging my body and soul. Such an amazing special feeling!

From that moment on, I see breastfeeding as an exchange of loving energy.

How to meditate during breastfeeding

There are several ways to meditate while breastfeeding. Find a way that feels best to you. You can guide your own meditation or follow this guided breastfeeding meditation.

Ways to guide your own meditation:

  • Follow your breath:
Longer exhales than inhales calms you down. Try to take long, slow breaths to slow down your heartbeat and relax the baby.
  • Connect with your heart:
Feel the area of your heart expanding and engaging with the heart of your baby. Open yourself to notice the abundance of love.
  • Scan all your chakra’s:
Follow your energy pathways. Especially connecting with your third eye and crown chakra. To connect with the soul of your baby.

Setting for breastfeeding meditation

Make sure you are comfortable and able to relax. If possible, in a hammock with lots of singing birds around. But your bed, the sofa or a relaxing chair are also perfect places for meditation. Be sure to make yourself and baby comfortable with some pillows and blankets.

If you can be outdoors that is always ideal.

Sky gazing

Sky gazing with your baby is wondrous! If possible try to take baby outdoors in the evening to look at the stars. And see how your little one reacts,

I did this with Saoirse when she was two days old. She had such a bright and happy look on her face when looking towards the stars. This was definitely one of the most special moments in her first weeks.

Introduce your baby to music

Music is a great way to relax yourself and baby. Put on some music that you love. Preferably what you already played while your baby was still in the womb. For example, your birth playlist.

You can also find beautiful meditative music or frequency music online. My personal favourite is the sounds of Whales and Dolphins. As it really helped to settle both me and Saoirse down during all the postpartum excitement.

Singing to your baby

There is no better music for your little one than mama’ singing voice. Believe me. Even when you are a terrible singer – like I’m. Baby will love to hear you sing those lullabies. You will be rewarded with a relaxing baby and big smiles (in the future).

It doesn’t matter what you sing. So, no worries if you don’t know any lullaby by heart. It is just your voice and the tone and rhythm what baby will love. The first time you settle your baby by singing, it feels so special! She will be your biggest fan.

We usually make up silly songs. But I also love to sing mantras to Saoirse. Which brings calmness and set her to sleep. Our favourite mantra is:
I am the light of my soul – Sirgun Kaur & Sat Darshan Singh

Besides comforting the baby, singing is also a great way for mama to relax. As it opens and releases blockages in your throat chakra. Also, singing creates hormones that improve your mood. A win win, full of love.

Holistic Baby massage

A holistic baby massage is a great way to relax mind, body and soul. This counts for you mama, but just as much (or even more) for your baby.

The massage space

Make sure your baby enjoys its massage in a peaceful place. Put on a diffuser with essential oil. Place your baby on a soft and warm surface. You could, for example, use your changing table or bed.

How to give a baby massage

With baby massage, you can’t go wrong. As long as you hold and stroke your baby with love.

Make sure baby stays in contact

Baby makes contact by watching you (and smiling if they are a bit older). When your baby starts to get fussy or look away stop the massage. As you want your baby to enjoy this time. Don’t force anything. A 5-minute massage is already a lot.

Ideally, you use plant-based oil. Nothing perfumed or unnatural as this can harm baby’s skin. Some sweet almond oil is perfect.

When to give baby massage?

Enjoy this special moment of love and attention anytime a day. A perfect moment is before bed-time as a nighttime routine. But you can also give the baby massage to calm her.

Essential oils

Essential oils are a holistic way of introducing smells to your baby. As these oils don’t only smell nice. They also have healing and relaxing effects.

For example: diffuse some lavender drops for calmness. You could do this before bedtime or during your baby massage.

Explore nature

Spend as much time outdoors as possible. Babies love nature.

Nature has a relaxing effect on us. The natural smells, the sounds of birds and the views of greenery bring our body in a calm state. Same counts for baby. You can take baby with you while babywearing. Baby loves to be close and feels save near your body.
