Babywearing benefits ♡ Why you want to have your baby close

Babywearing benefits: there are so many! It naturally feels good to have your baby close. And, so it does for baby. Resulting in a calm baby, that cries way less.

Therefore, baby enjoys a faster development and learns more.

From all the things I got when pregnant. The baby sling is the only thing I use 24/7- the only real essential item.

All benefits of babywearing:

Benefits of babywearing ♡ Attachment parenting

The benefits of babywearing are numerous. And a must, according to Attachment Parenting advocates. Babywearing is one of the 8 Baby B’s. Modern-day tools for attachment parenting. Created by dr. Sears.

Dr Sears also created this list of babywearing benefits for baby:

Baby wearing reduces crying

Research shows that baby wearing reduces crying. Dr. Sears shares that we are led to believe that it is normal for a baby to cry. However, this is not the norm for other cultures. Where babywearing and co-sleeping is normal.

In cultures where babywearing is the standard: They measure crying by minutes instead of hours.

Sling babies learn more

Sling babies learn more, how come? Baby’s who are being worn spend less time crying and fussing. So, what do they do with that extra time? They learn!

And, as they are joining you in your day to day life. They are really part of your life. Seeing everything you do from your eyes. Which is different when they are in the pram.

Saoirse is 5 months now and copies everything I do. For example, She loves “brushing” her teeth while I’m doing this. She is super engaged in our world and a fast learner.

The optimal state of learning

When you wear your baby, they are in the optimal state of learning. Sling babies spend more time in the “state of quiet alertness”. That’s when they are the most content and learn more.

Dr Sears called this the optimal state of learning. Which is also shown by research.

Baby is part of your world

Another huge benefit is the 180 view baby has. Which makes baby part of your world. Tiny humans in a sling make the decision what to look at – and whatnot. And, when they are looking: they are learning. This ability to choose, again, enhances learning.

Babywearing regulates baby’s system after birth

When babies are born their whole systems are disrupted. In the womb, the system of the baby regulates naturally. The more you help baby regulate their system the calmer they become. And the better they develop.

Memories from the womb calm baby

While baby is close to mama (or daddy) baby feels calm. She feels the same movements, hears the same heartbeat. As a biological regulator baby feels the same breath when being chest-to-chest or tummy-to-tummy. It all reminds the baby of being the womb. As a result, baby will feel calm and at ease.

Calm babies develop better

Calm babies develop better, as they don’t have to spend time on self-soothing.

Ways of self-calming: intensive tump sucking, colicky cries, jerky movements, disoriented self rocking, irregular breathing and disturbed sleep.

This might happen when the baby spends most of his time horizontal in their crib. When a mother is only there to feed and comfort. And the baby spends the most time on its own.

In order for a baby’s emotional, intellectual, and physiological systems to function optimally, the continued presence of the mother, the most important benefits of babywearing, is a necessary regulatory influence.

Dr. Sears

Getting to know your world

There is no better way for your little one to learn about the world. While you wear your baby she sees what you see. Hear what you hear. And sometimes even feel what you feel. Because your baby is sitting right under your nose.

Babies learn best in the arms of a busy parent.

For example the experience of washing the dishes. Baby learns about the noises, smells, motion etc.

She also learns subtle facial expressions, body language, voice and tones and even emotions from the mother or father. A kick-start in getting to know their new world.

Carried babies are smarter

The brains of carried babies develop much faster. As baby constantly see what mummy – and daddy – are doing. The brain develops so-called: “patterns of behaviour”. Which is like a movie in your baby’s brain. Remembering all the situations and how to respond to them.

Enhanced speech

By wearing your baby she is on voice and eye level. Therefore, baby involves in your conversations. That is why sling babies have faster speech development. While also learn the important lesson of listening.

Learning from sounds

The noises of daily activities could either disturb the baby. Or she can learn from them. When wearing your baby learn from sounds. As baby feels save and comfortable in mother’s arms. There is no need to feel scared.

Summary

Babywearing has major benefits for the development of baby:

  • Babywearing reduces crying
  • Sling babies learn more
  • Babywearing regulates baby’s system after birth
  • Baby gets to know your world
  • Carried babies are smarter

While baby is close to your body she gets to know all about the new world. In the safe environment of being close to mama (or daddy). When baby feels safe there is no need to self soothe. No crying, no sleep disturbance.

As a result, there is more time to learn, grow and develop.

We use the baby sling constantly. Saoirse loves to be part of our daily activities. Especially now she is a bit older (4 months) she loves to see everything we do. When Saoirse was still a newborn the sling was her safe harbour. Her happy place where she was always sleeping like a baby. She rarely cries.

Therefore, it must be obvious already:
We are big fans of babywearing!
