Why a placenta bury ceremony
My birth was a magical experience. An unmedicated home-birth in the mountains of Spain. Where we live.
I feel blessed for being guided in my birth by an holistic midwife and doula. They both told me about the ancient traditions of burying the placenta. Giving it back to the earth. And this really resonated with me.
As I like to show Saoirse holistic and natural ways of living.
We also choice to make placenta pills and tincture. My midwife told me I could do both. And she divided the placenta for me.

Magical first times
On the second day after birth we all went out to find a place in nature. We went with the whole new family. Mummy and daddy, Woofer (our dog) and Saoirse.
It was so magical to be out with Saoirse for the first time.I was wearing her in the baby carrier instead of my belly. So magical!
She loved it! It felt so good to take her out to nature.
As our garden is mostly terraced we choice to find a spot on the mountain.
The journey of finding a beautiful spot was already magical.
Next to our house on the mountain we found a space. Surrounded by trees, flowers and herbs. It was perfect!
Then it hit me.
Eric (daddy) started digging a hole in the ground. And then it hit me.
My baby is out. For so long I’ve been waiting for this moment. I felt so intense happy. But also empty.
It was such a strange sensation to not longer have Saoirse in my belly.
Our placenta bury ritual
When we placed the placenta in the ground I was sharing words for Saoirse. They came out all intuitively. From deep within.
Connect with the earth
The placenta bury ritual is a way for the Maya’s to connect the baby with the earth. Baby is not a part of mama anymore. But a tiny human, part of nature.
I shared words about how Saoirse is now part of the earth. That she can always find energy in nature. She is one with all: the trees, the butterflies, the flowers. Nature is a place where she can always get back to. To reconnect and recharge.
And the emotions came
Now my emotions came up. Up until this moment I didn’t fully realise what had happened. It is so magical to have a baby coming out of your body.
With this placenta bury ritual it really got to me. Saoirse is no longer a magical being growing in my body.
She is now here. With us.
I feel so intense grateful for my little family.
Into the wild
Just a little side note for those who are living with wild boars. Or other wild animals near.
When we came back to the place where we did our placenta ritual I was shocked. Our placenta has been dug up! And the stones which daddy carefully put around it where everywhere.
It seems like the wild boars dug it up.
This was a big surprise, I didn’t know what to feel.
And now I see it as a way of practicing non attachment. The placenta has really found its way into the eco-system…
Summary
The little placenta bury ceremony we have done was a magical experience. Right then it got to me. My sweet little baby is no longer growing inside of me. She is another soul. Another one of us. Here on earth.
I trust that with our ritual she is even more connected to the earth. Her new home. Even though our placenta ritual got a different twist…
I would highly recommend to make a placenta bury ritual with your family. It felt super special.
However I’m also super grateful for the placenta pills and tincture we’ve made. To divide the placenta was the best option for our family.
